THE ROLE OF PUBLIC ACCOUNTANTS IN MERGERS AND ACQUISITIONS
This study aims to: 1) Explore the critical roles played by public accountants in mergers and acquisitions (M&A), 2) Assess the impact of their involvement on the success of M&A transactions, and 3) Identify the skills and competencies necessary for effective participation in M&As. A survey design is employed to collect extensive quantitative data from accountants involved in M&A activities. The sample size, determined using Taro Yamane’s formula, is 340, ensuring statistical significance with a 95% confidence level and a 5% margin of error. Lagos, being a major commercial center, is chosen as the case study location. The reliability coefficient score of the survey is 0.89, indicating high consistency. Findings suggest that public accountants play crucial roles in due diligence, valuation, and integration processes of M&As, significantly contributing to the success of these transactions. Key skills identified include financial analysis, regulatory knowledge, and strategic planning. The study recommends that accounting firms provide specialized M&A training and encourage certification in related areas to enhance their accountants’ effectiveness in M&A engagements.
